Take One is a unique program in Tennessee that supports both families and people coming home from prison and is offered through the Tennessee Department of Correction. It connects churches, mosques, synagogues, and other nonprofits with returning citizens and their families. These organizations agree to mentor one person and their family for a year, offering them the support they need to adjust to life after prison.
How Does Take One Help Families?
Take One begins 6 to 12 months before a person is released from prison. During this time, the organization not only helps the person getting ready to come home but also works with their family. Families often face challenges when a loved one returns home and Take One provides guidance and encouragement for everyone involved. This support helps families grow stronger and have a sense of community as they reunite and face the transition together.
Why It’s Important
Nearly all people in prison today will return to their communities. However, 46% of them will be rearrested within three years. Take One aims to lower this number by helping people succeed after release. With the right support, returning citizens and their families have a better chance of staying together and thriving.
Faith-based and nonprofit organizations can make a real difference by mentoring one returning person and their family for a year. Take One provides training and connects organizations with other community groups to share resources and support.
Take One can help you and your loved ones find strength and stability as you reunite. With a team by your side, you don't have to face the journey alone. If your organization is interested, please apply here. For more information on this program view Take One’s brochure.
