April is the time to celebrate the health and well-being of our families and communities! National Public Health Week (NPHW), happening April 7-13, 2025, marks its 30th anniversary this year. This special week is all about recognizing the efforts that keep our neighborhoods healthy and learning how we can all play a part in making a difference.
What is Public Health?
Public health is more than just going to the doctor when you're sick. It's everything that helps keep us safe and well. It includes clean air and water, healthy food, and access to medical care. It's about the choices we make at home, at work, and in our communities that affect our health every day. Important public health advancements include the development of vaccines, the prevention and control of infectious diseases, improved motor vehicle safety, fluoridation of drinking water, and continued efforts to prevent tobacco use.
Why is This Important for Families?
When families focus on health, they create strong foundations for the future. Whether it's making nutritious meals, staying active, or ensuring kids get regular checkups, small choices add up to a big impact. This year's NPHW theme, “It Starts Here,” Reminds us that good health begins with us.
Here are three key areas to focus on during NPHW 2025:
- Your health is our mission - Taking care of yourself and your family helps build a stronger, healthier community.
- A clean environment supports better health for everyone. Simple actions like recycling or using less energy can make a difference.
- Everyone deserves access to quality healthcare and healthy living conditions.
