March is National Nutrition Month: Resources to Help Your Family Eat Well

March is National Nutrition Month, a time to focus on healthy eating and making informed food choices. Eating well helps families grow strong, stay active, and feel their best. There are many programs available to help Tennessee families access nutritious food, learn about healthy eating, and build positive lifelong habits.

Tennessee Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program: Supporting Families

The Tennessee Women Infants and Children (WIC) program is a federally funded program designed to provide supplemental food assistance and nutrition education. WIC helps families by providing:

  • Nutritious foods for pregnant women, new moms, and children under five.
  • Breastfeeding support and infant feeding guidance.
  • Nutrition education to help families make healthy choices.
  • Health care referrals for families in need.

Do you have or need a WIC appointment or want to apply for WIC? Please call your local county health department for services. If you need more information or need further assistance, call 1-800-DIAL-WIC (800-342-5942).

WICShopper App: Making Shopping Easier

The WICShopper App helps families get the most out of their WIC benefits. With the app, you can:

  • Check your benefits in real time.
  • Find WIC-approved foods while shopping.
  • Access easy and delicious recipes using WIC foods.
  • Get alerts about food recalls and program updates.
  • Locate WIC vendors and offices with the built in map.

Food Connects Us Campaign by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

This year's National Nutrition Month theme, “Food Connects Us,” reminds us that food brings people together and plays an important role in our health. Throughout March, families are encouraged to:

  • Learn cooking and meal planning skills.
  • Connect with Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) for expert advice.
  • Explore cultural foods and try new recipes.
  • Build healthy habits that last a lifetime.

MyPlate: A Simple Guide to Healthy Eating

MyPlate is a modern approach to balanced eating. It's easy to use, customizable, and based on science. MyPlate replaced the food guide pyramid and uses the latest technology to provide a personalized approach to nutrition. MyPlate helps families:

  • Choose a variety of foods throughout the day.
  • Eat the right portions from each food group.
  • Adapt meals to fit personal taste, cultural traditions, and budgets.

National Nutrition Month is the perfect time to take advantage of these programs and resources. Small steps toward healthier eating can make a big difference for your family's well-being.
