Truancy Prevention Program

Truancy Prevention staff partners with the Kingsport City and Sullivan County Schools along with the Sullivan County Juvenile Court to identify and serve youth and families at risk of being petitioned to court for Truancy.

Eligibility Requirements

The Truancy Prevention Program has several components, including, prevention, intervention and drop-out prevention. This program is designed to meet the identified needs of school and court personnel to better enable them to serve children with poor school attendance while reducing the commitments to state custody for acts of Truancy.
Students under the age of eighteen (18) and identified as at risk due for Truancy issues will be considered. Referrals come from a variety of sources including the schools, administrators, director of student services for each school system or the Juvenile Court and yes concerned parents or friends.
The Truancy Prevention Program offers case management of services to identify and address underlying causes of Truancy along with linkage of school and community resources along with services which address student and family needs, while creating opportunities for academic success. To avoid court intervention there are various methods which may be used, including but not limited to: (A) Meeting with students and their families to identify any underlying problem(s) or needs, (B) Parent information and education, (C) Referrals to individual or family counseling, (D) Tutoring services, (E) Resource centers for needed food/clothing, (F) Education regarding alternative options for finishing high school. These are just some of the ways to reach children and families who are at risk and prevent court intervention.
