Exchange Club Family Center/First STEPS-Teen Parenting Program
First STEPS is a one-year comprehensive teen parenting and life-skills support system for first-time teen mothers between the ages of 12-19 years old who show a risk for becoming an abusive or negligent parent. The program begins with a 14 week parenting and life-skills class which addresses pre-natal care, parenting, family planning, job readiness, and anger management. The teen mothers are taught to provide for themselves and their infants, prevent child abuse and reduce juvenile delinquency.
Each mother is paired with a Parent Aide who becomes a personal support system, role model and mentor for up to a year. Assistance in getting to pre-natal visits and connecting with other local resources is also provided.
Both mothers and fathers are encouraged to participate in the parenting and life-skills classes.
First STEPS provides a teen parenting support group as well as potential family mentors upon completion of the class. Classes are scheduled year round on a rotating basis.
